The difference between medical assisting and nursing is that the medical assistant's skills are geared toward ambulatory care and medical office management in a doctor's office, while nursing is geared toward providing skilled medical and health care for the sick, chronically ill, or dying.

The medical assistant curriculum typically covers general clinical and administrative medical office skills and knowledge such as medical office administration, patient appointment scheduling and medical transcription. Some medical assistants are trained directly on the job without any formal training in a medical office and may include health insurance billing procedures, appointment referrals and medical records management, which is not typically taught in a nursing program.

Medical assistants are non-licensed members of the medical office team. Doctors in private and group practices prefer to hire them because they are trained specifically for the medical office and are often more cost efficient (less pay) than RNs or LPNs. They work under the direct supervision of a doctor, in the front and back office of the practice, usually Mondays through Fridays, from 8-5 PM and rarely on weekends or holidays, which some feel are better hours than those in nursing. They are utilized in the administrative, laboratory, or clinical areas depending on the office's specific needs.

Nurses, on the other hand, work independently and as part of a team to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care in different specialties and different shifts. Some pull doubles and many work on weekends, holidays, on-call and per diem. The nurse's training is geared toward hospital or institutionalized patient care and mainly focuses on the foundations of traditional nursing and patient care, which is taking care of people that are sick, injured, infirm, or elderly in a hospital, institution, or nursing home. Their focus area lies on the anatomy and inner workings of the body, disease processes, medical management of diseases, conditions and nursing interventions associated with each disease, physiology, chemistry and pharmacology, which covers common medications, their uses, side effects, route, dosage and actions on the body.

A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) can spend from 12 to 18 months in an accredited nursing school and then must take the National Council Licensure Examination-Practical Nursing (NCLEX PN). The Registered Nurse (RN) associate degree takes at 2 years of full time college attendance, followed by the entry-level Nursing Competence Exam for Licensure as Registered Nurses, the NCLEX-RN. There also are 4 year programs in nursing which end in a nursing degree that leads to highly respected RN credentials.

Other significant differences:

* wages and benefits* work hours* duties* continuing education* scope of practice* supervision* licensing

RNs and LPNs are registered and licensed within their state and are allowed to perform more complex patient care procedures than a medical assistant, such as drawing arterial blood samples, administering chemotherapy, or starting and flushing IV tubing.

Anybody would be hard pressed to state with occupation is better, nursing or medical assisting, since both occupations have their place in health care as a whole. Each discipline has its specific place and purpose, even though there is a plethora of never ending discussions on the Internet revolving around this topic, going back and forth. We invite you to do your own research to find out what is right for you. Check your local newspaper and job offers in your area to see who and where medical assistants are hired and who is hiring RNs and LPNs. In reading the job offers you can also learn much about the kind of duties and responsibilities each one has and what employers expect and are willing to pay.

According to the Department of Labor (DOL), healthcare was one of the largest industries in the year 2008, providing 14.3 million jobs.*1 Furthermore, the sector is projected to add another 3.2 million new jobs until 2018. *2

If you are planning to start a work at home career, then healthcare is one field worth considering. Not only is the vertical brimming with jobs that offer the flexibility to telecommute, but also most of these opportunities don't require extensive schooling. In fact, it's possible to start a lot of healthcare home-based jobs with a vocational training program at a career school or college.

Here are some potential healthcare careers for stay at home moms, retired folk, working professionals looking for a side career, or just about anyone keen to spend less time on road traveling to work and more time with their family.

Medical Transcription: Those familiar with the healthcare industry would know that medical transcription has been around for a while. However, the profession has evolved a great deal over the years from the time manual typewriters were used by medical transcriptionists (MTs) to transcribe doctor dictations to now when most of them use top of the line, cutting-edge laptop computers to do the job.

Post-secondary training programs in medical transcription may provide candidates the skillset for this job. Such medical transcriptionist courses are available at career schools and colleges and many of them are self-paced online programs.

Voluntary certifications are offered to MTs by the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity(AHDI) upon meeting certain requirements.

Medical Billing & Coding: It's one of the allied healthcare professions projected to grow at a much faster than average rate over the next few years, according to the DOL. To become a medical billing and coding specialist, one needs to be good with numbers as the job involves assigning standardized codes to various clinical procedures and using these codified documents for the billing process.

Medical coders and billers can perform their job independently from home and require only limited interaction with healthcare providers and health insurance companies.

Aspirants can gain the skills for this job through a vocational training program in medical billing and coding. Alternatively, Associate degrees in fields like Allied Health or Medical Specialties may also provide the required proficiencies to those keen to have some college experience.

Medical Writing: If you have decent writing skills and some clinical experience, freelance healthcare writing can prove to be an extremely lucrative work-at-home career. It will allow you to let your creative juices flow and provide an outlet to the writer in you. At the same time, you will be able to make more than decent money for it. According to payscale.com, freelance writers in the healthcare industry can earn up to $50 in hourly wages.3

There are plenty of avenues that medical writers or communicators can write for including textbooks, journals, white papers, websites, marketing collateral, etc. Joining organizations like the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) may help healthcare writers find freelance assignments.

Telephone Triage: This is a popular work at home profession amongst registered nurses (RNs). It involves RNs offering clinical advice to patients over the telephone. They listen to the symptoms that patients describe and use their clinical knowledge to provide a medical assessment.

Since telephone triage services are mostly offered by RNs, the training requirements for the job are the same as that of a registered nurse - a two-year or four-year college degree or a hospital-administered nursing diploma. Experience in nursing practice may also be necessary to become a telephone triage nurse.

Virtual Medical Assistant: The job of a medical assistant involves performing administrative tasks at a healthcare center. This includes scheduling appointments, maintaining patient records, following up on insurance claims, and a range of other paperwork. A lot of these tasks can be handled virtually from a remote location and may prove more cost-effective, especially for small employers. That's why many independent physicians are trending towards hiring virtual assistants. It helps them trim their office staff and tighten their budgets.

Skills for this job can be acquired through a medical assistant training program from a career school or a two-year college degree.

Jobs and careers eat up almost all of our waking time. Often, we no longer have room for even just a few minutes of quality time for our immediate family module; much less the parents who, now growing old, had cared for us from birth till the time we were ready to live our own lives independently. Nursing homes, despite negative publicity even though rare, are our reluctant best option.

Parting with family is in itself a very tough episode in our otherwise comfortable and peaceful lives. Even if we know that our parent is being sent to aged care professionals who know better than us in terms of care for elderly people, we still feel uncomfortable in the sense that they will be away from us, missing us the way we will be missing them. Add to the fact that even though professional, the care that will be given our parent is potentially impersonal, the caregiver being a person not related to us. We, however, do not have a choice. We all know that it is not sensible to give up our careers or professions just be with and care for our elderly. In the end, we rationalise that "it is just a matter of getting used to".

Indeed we appeal to reason - for everybody's sake. We have our own kids to take care of and careers to keep so we can lead decent lives without having to pressure ourselves with extra effort and time to caring for our aging parents taking up needed space at home, potentially detrimental to all other aspects of our lives. We finally settle down and feel content with the thought that they will be in good professional hands. We also plan to set aside some time to visit our parted family every other weekend.

As we have settled down on having crossed a difficult psycho-emotional crossroads of our adult life, we have to rouse ourselves to pointed realities. In exchange for the professional care extended to our parents in the nursing home, we have to meet the obligation of paying for it according to agreed terms. Even with support from the government's health care programs, there are costs that are or cannot be covered and we have to pay them out of pocket. It is good if the family has a flourishing business or a professional income that can sustain these costs, along with all other obligations such as the children's education, mortgage payments, health insurance and medical bills, etc.

At any rate, whatever our situation is, we all know that we know how and are equipped to survive any challenge that may confront us mighty humans.

If you have been scouring the Sunday newspaper and the Internet for work from home opportunities, you should probably know that you are not the only one. Increasingly, people have been looking for opportunities that allow them to work from a remote location, which in most cases is their home.

Their reasons for seeking such opportunities may be different. Some are victims of circumstances while others make a choice, but the motivation behind their pursuit is the same - greater flexibility, minimal or no commute, more time for family, and the likes.

Well, your search for genuine work-at-home jobs ends here because we have complied for you a list of top 10 home-based careers.

Medical Transcription: It's perhaps one of the most popular, but also often misunderstood work-at-home career. Many people make the mistake of thinking that just about anyone can take a shot at medical transcription. After all how difficult can listening to recordings and typing them out be? But that couldn't be further off from the truth. The job is quite complex and hard to break into without formal medical transcriptionist training or prior clinical experience. Courses in medical transcription can be completed at career and community colleges or vocational schools.

Medical Coding & Billing: An important part of health information management, medical coding and billing involves assigning international codes to all the procedures that are performed in a healthcare unit and using codified documents for billing private health insurance carriers and the government. This job requires knowledge of different coding standards, medical terminology, pharmacology, anatomy, medical record format, etc. The best way to gain this knowledge is through a medical billing and coding course from a vocational school or a health information degree from a four-year college or university.

Web Design & Development: Almost all businesses, from the smallest entity to the biggest corporate, now have a presence on the web. This has created a demand for people who can develop and design websites and web applications. Depending on your training, you could either be involved in the frontend design and layout of a website or writing the backend code that serves visual and textual content on a website. Often companies, especially smaller ones, hire freelance designers and developers to create their online properties.

Virtual Assistance: When the whole world is going virtual, why should administrative support services be left behind? Yes, that's right. It's possible to perform a variety of admin and clerical tasks remotely using a computer, high-speed Internet connection, telephone, and a fax machine. Job prerequisites may not be much on paper, but completing administrative assistant training from a vocational school will do your chances no harm. What will further boost your marketability is a Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification. This may necessitate further training in Microsoft Office courses.

Translation: Globalization has created a demand for multi-lingual people like never before. As countries continue on the path of aggressive business, cultural and political exchange, the need for professionals who can remove the language barrier between them has increased. These professionals translate a multitude of written materials from one language to another and are required to understand not just the subject at hand, but also cultural nuances of the countries to which these languages be long.

Accountant: Accountants perform a variety of tasks for individuals and businesses including tax consulting, financial planning, payroll management, tracking finances, preparing financial reports, etc. According to the Department of Labor, approximately 8 per cent of about 1.3 million accountants and auditors were self-employed in the year 2008.1

Content Writing/Editing: The Internet has just exploded over the last few years and there is a lot of content on the web that needs writing, proofing, polishing, and presenting. There's a world of opportunity waiting to be explored for those who are gifted writers or have taken courses in publishing and editing. Considering the vastness that is Internet, it's safe to assume there's enough work to accommodate many, many, many writing and editing professionals!

Telephone Nurse Triage: Telephone triage nurses are RNs who respond to health questions over the phone. They rely on their academic background and training to listen to patient symptoms and offer an assessment of their health situation. They also advise patients about follow-up procedures required and may even direct them to appropriate emergency services.

Customer Support Rep: Customer support representatives respond to client calls and troubleshoot problems related to a product or service they have bought. Although people would have you believe that all customer support jobs have moved overseas, but it's worth noting that customer service was among the largest occupations in 2008 with 2.3 million jobs.2The educational requirements are rudimentary at best with many employers hiring high school graduates who demonstrate good communication and problem solving skills.

Childcare: If you love having kids around, childcare services is a great work from home option you can explore. The Department of Labor states that 33 percent childcare providers are self-employed and most of them offer their services from home.3 As a childcare provider, you will be required to care for children while their parents are away at work. Part of a childcare provider's job is to teach, nurture, and supervise children of different age groups.

Though many people do not often think of it, nursing home jobs offer great careers for many skilled workers. The typical nursing home job is a rewarding experience for those of us who love working with people and with the elderly in particular. Workers provide elderly clients with the care needed to treat illness, disability and injury. For those of us with big hearts, these facilities mean the opportunity to help improve the quality of many lives, and they allow us the chance to make money while doing so. There are many different facility options, meaning that there are quite a few jobs to suit the different talents of potential workers.

It takes all kinds of people to run a nursing home, and skilled nurses are not the only ones who work in these facilities. The front office is brimming with administrative workers whose expertise lies in the technical details of running a facility. After all, it would not be possible to run a nursing home without someone to receive visitors and answer the phone all day. The main financial adviser would also work in this department. And there is room for growth, workers who begin in one position will always be able to grow and move up to work in new positions. Coordinators, secretaries and accountants will all find that there are positions available for them in the front office. Of course, those who answer the phone may find it difficult to simply move up to work as an accountant which requires a specialized education but the nursing home may pay for any education required for another position within the company.

Obviously, a nursing home offers quite a few opportunities for those with nursing qualifications. In homes, nurses help patients get through the day without any problems. They feed patients, bathe them, and offer hygienic procedures to those who can't perform them on their own. Nurses give patients their prescribed medicines and provide them with the care they were trained to give. Many nurses who work in homes are given supervisory positions, overseeing the work of less qualified individuals throughout the day.

Nursing homes often have their own onsite pharmacy, which must be peopled with workers. The pharmacy makes sure that patients receive their medications - no matter what time of day or night they are needed. In addition to the actual pharmacist, pharmacy technicians work to ensure that the facility stays running smoothly. The techs fill out paperwork and answer phones while qualified pharmacists, who require many years of training and a few degrees, maintain orders and answer questions concerning prescriptions. The pharmacist is the one who mixes and dispenses the actual prescriptions.

Those who have studied social work may be able to find a job in a nursing home. Social services are a large field in the industry, and psychologists and social workers both will find that there are positions available to them in nursing homes. These workers must be licensed to work in the field, and are typically trained to deal with the psychological issues facing patients.

Are you frustrated with the lack of results that come up with a Google query for the term Christian job search? Many people are sick of working for immoral or corrupt businesses and organizations that are only there to serve the selfish desires of the business, organization, or owners. The latest Gallup polls show that many people are very dissatisfied with their jobs today. To make matters worse, the economy is not getting any better, so many people are still out of work or under employed. Many economic experts have speculated that the unemployment rate is much higher than advertised, as many people have stopped looking for work, and many other people are underemployed. This means that the competition for available jobs is fierce. There are several ways you can find a job through your Christian job search efforts.

You cannot find a job simply by submitting your resume everywhere. Most of the great jobs are never advertised on job boards. Despite all of the advances in technology, most people still get hired at a company because they already know someone that works there. When a position is posted at a jobs website, companies often receive hundreds if not thousands of responses to this email. If a company is going through hundreds of resumes, it is likely that your resume is going to get lost in the shuffle. You should still submit your resume to these sites, but this should only be the first step in your job search.

Employers should post very specific job descriptions for their positions.

If you are offering Christian employment opportunities, you should post a very descriptive job description on the job boards. You should list as many qualifications and skills as possible when you are creating the job position listing. This will help deter people who are not actually qualified for the job, and you will get more qualified applicants who are looking for the specific position you need.Get the contact information of all employers where you submit a resume.

Most job seekers are not going to take the time to personally contact people from the different companies where they are applying. This is where you can stand out in your Christian job search. Go directly to the websites of the companies where you are applying. Smaller companies will likely have the contact information listed on the site. You can use this information to call them directly about the status of your resume. This is a great way to get in touch with the right contact person in a company.Apply for jobs that have recently been posted, or repost your jobs frequently if you are the employer. The best time to apply for a new job posting is right after the job has been posted. Jobs that were posted weeks ago probably already have hundreds of applicants, so it is possible that these positions have already been filled. Even though you may be looking for Christian employment opportunities, many of the same rules apply when it comes to a Christian job search.

Graduate recruitment agencies are a great tool for students who recently graduated from university. In this ever changing job market, it's often hard to find job vacancies. Some companies only post jobs internally or only post them through job boards or recruitment agencies. Recruitment agencies were once looked at as an easy way out for recent graduates. However, recently they've been considered legitimate resources for people seeking jobs. Graduate recruitment agencies hire recruiters who utilize their skills to place each graduate in a great company. Agencies make the employment process smoother for both the graduate and the company that hires them.

Of course, while there are many positive aspects about graduate recruitment agencies, one downfall is that many agencies post the same job vacancies. These job vacancies are often the same vacancies that you'll find on common job boards. The reason these jobs are posted through multiple agencies is that the hiring company prefers to maximize the search potential instead of concentrating it through the resources of one or two agencies.

While it's frustrating to see the same job posted in multiple places and on multiple agency sites, you can use this to your advantage. Repeat job postings can lead you to different agencies. While it's good to focus on one recruitment agency during your job search, it also doesn't hurt to check out other agencies. New graduates should especially keep their options open and take advantage of researching alternate agencies. Only if you keep your options open, you stand a real chance to get placed on a job.

Using a graduate recruitment agency to search for other agencies might seem counterproductive, but it will provide you with more information. For instance, if you're looking for a marketing job and your current agency isn't providing you with any interviews, a new agency might have dozens of job vacancies. If you're following a repeat job posting link to a new agency, take a look around and see what services they offer and what job vacancies they have posted.

Additionally, check out the "Information" or "About Us" sections of each graduate recruitment agency website. They'll often include links to agency partners, subsidiaries, or alternate locations. Some of these subsidiaries or alternate locations specialize in recruitment in specific locations or industries. Some agencies are spread across various locations whereas some only focus on marketing, advertising, and administrative work and leave more technical and scientific based jobs to other agencies.

Recruiters often provide new graduates with information on the job seeking process, such as telephone hotlines, blogs, newsletters, or brochures. These usually include information on where to find additional agencies. Graduate recruitment agencies are usually tightly interlinked. However, it's easy to discover which agencies will be the best for your location, job sector, skill set, or education background.

Graduate recruitment agencies are a wonderful way to break into the job market. For new graduates, it's important to know all available resources. The first agency you find might not be the best for your specific needs, but it might be the one to give you information on another agency.

Finding a job can take months of time and effort. But you can speed the process by using many methods to find job openings. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics suggest that people who use many job search methods find jobs faster than people who use only one or two.

Personal contacts. Many jobs are never advertised. People get them by talking to friends, family, neighbors, acquaintances, teachers, former coworkers, and others who know of an opening. Be sure to tell people that you are looking for a job because the people you know may be some of the most effective resources for your search. To develop new contacts, join student, community, or professional organizations.

School career planning and placement offices. High school and college placement services help their students and alumni find jobs. Some invite recruiters to use their facilities for interviews or career fairs. They also may have lists of open jobs. Most also offer career counseling, career testing, and job search advice. Some have career resource libraries; host workshops on job search strategy, resume writing, letter writing, and effective interviewing; critique drafts of resumes; conduct mock interviews; and sponsor job fairs.

Employers. Directly contacting employers is one of the most successful means of job hunting. Through library and Internet research, develop a list of potential employers in your desired career field. Then call these employers and check their Web sites for job openings. Web sites and business directories can tell you how to apply for a position or whom to contact. Even if no open positions are posted, do not hesitate to contact the employer: You never know when a job might become available. Consider asking for an informational interview with people working in the career you want to learn more about. Ask them how they got started, what they like and dislike about the work, what type of qualifications are necessary for the job, and what type of personality succeeds in that position. In addition to giving you career information, they may be able to put you in contact with other employers who may be hiring, and they can keep you in mind if a position opens up.

Classified ads. The "Help Wanted" ads in newspapers and the Internet list numerous jobs, and many people find work by responding to these ads. But when using classified ads, keep the following in mind:

* Follow all leads to find a job; do not rely solely on the classifieds. * Answer ads promptly, because openings may be filled quickly, even before the ad stops appearing in the paper. * Read the ads every day, particularly the Sunday edition, which usually includes the most listings. * Keep a record of all ads to which you have responded, including the specific skills, educational background, and personal qualifications required for the position. You may want to follow up on your initial inquiry.

Internet resources. The Internet includes many job hunting Web sites with job listings. Some job boards provide National listings of all kinds; others are local. Some relate to a specific type of work; others are general. To find good prospects, begin with an Internet search using keywords related to the job you want. Also look for the Web sites of related professional associations.

Also consider checking Internet forums, also called message boards. These are online discussion groups where anyone may post and read messages. Use forums specific to your profession or to career-related topics to post questions or messages and to read about the job searches or career experiences of other people. Although these message boards may seem helpful, carefully evaluate all advice before acting; it can be difficult to determine the reliability of information posted on message boards.

In online job databases, remember that job listings may be posted by field or discipline, so begin your search using keywords. Many Web sites allow job seekers to post their resumes online for free.

Professional associations. Many professions have associations that offer employment information, including career planning, educational programs, job listings, and job placement. Information can be obtained directly from most professional associations through the Internet, by telephone, or by mail. Associations usually require that you be a member to use these services.

Labor unions. Labor unions provide various employment services to members and potential members, including apprenticeship programs that teach a specific trade or skill. Contact the appropriate labor union or State apprenticeship council for more information.

State employment service offices. The State employment service, sometimes called the Job Service, operates in coordination with the U.S. Department of Labors Employment and Training Administration. Local offices, found nationwide, help job seekers to find jobs and help employers to find qualified workers at no cost to either. To find the office nearest you, look in the State government telephone listings under "Job Service" or "Employment."

Job matching and referral. At the State employment service office, an interviewer will determine if you are "job ready" or if you need help from counseling and testing services to assess your occupational aptitudes and interests and to help you choose and prepare for a career. After you are job ready, you may examine available job listings and select openings that interest you. A staff member can then describe the job openings in detail and arrange for interviews with prospective employers.

Services for special groups. By law, veterans are entitled to priority job placement at State employment service centers. If you are a veteran, a veterans employment representative can inform you of available assistance and help you to deal with problems.

State employment service offices also refer people to opportunities available under the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) of 1998. Educational and career services and referrals are provided to employers and job seekers, including adults, dislocated workers, and youth. These programs help to prepare people to participate in the State's workforce, increase their employment and earnings potential, improve their educational and occupational skills, and reduce their dependency on welfare.

Federal Government. Information on obtaining a position with the Federal Government is available from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) through USAJOBS, the Federal Governments official employment information system. This resource for locating and applying for job opportunities can be accessed through the Internet at or through an interactive voice response telephone system at (703) 724-1850, (866) 204-2858, or TDD (978) 461-8404. These numbers are not all toll free, and telephone charges may result.

Community agencies. Many nonprofit organizations, including religious institutions and vocational rehabilitation agencies, offer counseling, career development, and job placement services, generally targeted to a particular group, such as women, youths, minorities, ex-offenders, or older workers.

Private employment agencies and career consultants. Private agencies can save you time and they will contact employers who otherwise might be difficult to locate. Such agencies may be called recruiters, head hunters, or employment placement agencies. These agencies may charge for their services. Most operate on a commission basis, charging a percentage of the first-year salary paid to a successful applicant. You or the hiring company will pay the fee. Find out the exact cost and who is responsible for paying associated fees before using the service. When determining if the service is worth the cost, consider any guarantees that the agency offers.

Internships. Many people find jobs with business and organizations with whom they have interned or volunteered. Look for internships and volunteer opportunities on job boards, school career centers, and company and association Web sites, but also check community service organizations and volunteer opportunity databases. Some internships and long-term volunteer positions come with stipends and all provide experience and the chance to meet employers and other good networking contacts.

It is an established fact that all job boards and career classifieds are created differently. Any employer, who is on the lookout for a new candidate for his work, will undeniably scout for the best candidate available for the job. A job board will assist him to locate both energetic and flaccid candidates. On the other hand, if you are a first time employment seeker or even someone who is planning a professional shift, it is of utmost importance to carefully observe as to what a job board or career network has to offer to you.

Some major information that you must consider carefully before you register as an employment seeker with a recruiting agency or job board or even if you are submitting your own resume to an employer, are mentioned below.

1. Job boards should recommend employment seeker facilities to enhance and accelerate the employment appointment procedure.

2. Employment seekers looking for an immediate change, the career board ought to suggest an economical, quality "representation" package, to guarantee the active seeker is being constantly offered for positions that match the candidate's true potential.

3. To enhance your chances of getting a quality employment offer, it is of paramount importance to join a network that contracts more than 5000 recruitment specialists. They give a lot of effort on creating a perfect employment match for you.

4. Ensure that your job network offers employment opportunities with 100K and up pay package, in addition to entry level positions, across all industries. Check if they are offering new employment opportunities regularly. Working with a progressive job network will mean that you will be constantly interacted with in the form of mails or telephone. Inter personal relationship and references helps in developing thriving business relationships.

5. A unique feature that a quality job board offers is career management services. They keep a constant track of all candidates and assist them in making career progress every two to three years.

Thus, we realize that all job boards are created to cater to different individual needs. It is imperative to be selective in choosing the right job network both as employer or employee, in order to make the employer - applicant match ideal.

If you're on a Chicago attorney search, you may be confused by the sheer number of Chicago area attorneys currently practicing law. You may not be sure how to narrow down your list of potential lawyers, or how to find the right legal specialist for your case.

Where Do You Start Your Chicago Attorney Search?

There are several ways to locate an attorney in Chicago, a Lake County divorce lawyer or an Illinois employment lawyer, but not all of these methods are effective. If you're simply going through the Yellow Pages or using an online directory that doesn't provide more than a location and phone number, narrowing down your list will be difficult at best.

You could call the local Bar Association in your county to get a list of members who specialize in the area of representation you need, but Bar Associations can't give you recommendations that will steer you toward one member or away from another. You'll get facts, but not much more. On the other hand, recommendations from friends or co-workers can go too far in the other direction; their praise or condemnation may be colored by their personal feelings and the outcome of their lawsuit.

Using The Internet - Chicago Attorney Search Made Easy

The best way to do an attorney search is to start on the Internet, then use recommendations or advice from others to fill in any blanks. You'll find that most Chicago attorneys, including Lake County divorce specialists and Illinois employment lawyers, have websites that can give you a lot of information about their practices and what areas of law are their specialties. A well designed website indicates that the attorneys are technologically savvy and dedicated to providing helpful information to clients and potential clients. If you find a site that has a blog with regular articles and updates, even better.

What Do You Look For In A Chicago Attorney Search?

Look for attorneys that have experience and expertise in the specific area in which you need representation. A Lake County divorce attorney should have at least ten years of experience in all aspects of family law, including separation, divorce, and custody issues. An attorney who has served on committees pertaining to family law, such as the Chicago Bar Association's Family Law Committee, can bring a unique perspective to your case.

If your Chicago attorney search is for an Illinois employment lawyer, experience is just as crucial. An attorney who has broad based experience in everything from discrimination and sexual harassment to severance negotiations and non-compete agreements will assure that you are adequately represented. If your Illinois employment lawyer has served on relevant committees or published in legal journals, he or she will be up to date on all aspects of employment law.

The Initial Consultation

Be sure to contact the lawyers you've found during your Chicago attorney search and ask for an initial consultation. In most cases, this will be free of charge, but be sure to ask. At the consultation, each attorney will ask some questions about your situation in order to determine if you have a case. This is also the time for you to ask some questions and gauge whether you are interested in moving forward.

Compatibility is important in any professional relationship, but it is particularly crucial for the attorney/client relationship. Ask yourself if you feel comfortable talking with the attorney. Is he or she explaining the legal process to you clearly? Is he or she answering your questions or evading them? Will he or she be easy to reach if you have any concerns? All of these are important when you're looking for an Illinois employment lawyer, Lake County divorce attorney, or any other kind of legal representation. Taking the time to do a thorough Chicago attorney search and interviewing each attorney will ensure you will be represented in the best way possible.

How to Get Proper Returns on Your Retirement - Secrets to How to Invest Your Money When Retiring.

Investments are necessary for people from all walks of life. Investments ensure a safe and financially secure future. One major factor that decides how one should invest is retirement. Planning a retirement is a complex task. One has to take many factors into consideration, one of them being financial security after retirement.

Retirement investing also has various goals depending on different factors. A person may retire at age 60 or age 80. If a person survives till the age of 90, and has retired at 60, they are looking forward to 30 years of non-full-time-employment, whereas if they retire at 80, it's only ten years of non-full-time-employment years.

The best suggestion that comes to mind while planning a retirement investment is safe investments. The best way to have a care-free retirement life is by opening an account in a bank early in the professional life and depositing some money every month. This way, by the time the individual retires, they will have a lump sum amount in the bank, along with the interest earned on it through the years. Banks generally offer a 2 to 2.5 percent interest per month on the amount deposited. However, for this investment to make any good returns, you should start investing quite early in their professional life.

'Certificate of Deposits' are another way of investing for your after-retirement life. In this case, the investor lends money to a bank for a set amount of time, like six months to one year. The bank then repays the money to the investor at the end of the timespan, along with interest earned through the years. However, it entirely depends as to at what point of time the investor invests in Certificate of Deposits. One should try to bring the end of the timespan of the Certificate of Deposits at the time of their retiring from service.

Bank Bonds are another way of planning your retirement investments. You can invest your money in a bank for a longer period of time, for example, four to six years. The bank will then pay you back the money with a interest at six to seven percentage per month.

Though these three ways of investing are safe, secure and flexible, they don't give as much returns as one might want. For such long run investments, stocks are a good bet. Though stocks are known to be volatile and have fallen many times, a small amount put in safe stocks in the share market may give you more returns than bank accounts, certificate of deposits and bonds put together. Also, stocks and shares are known to be as trustworthy as a bond or a certificate of deposit. It all depends on which company you wish to invest in.

Investments, and particularly retirement investments are risky business. Therefore, it is always suggested to take the help and suggestions of a professional investor. There are companies which offer asset allocation systems for retirees. These asset allocation systems will recommend you how to allocate your assets after retirement.

There are many asset allocation companies in the market. You can find out more about them via the internet. Before going to a asset allocation company, you should make proper decisions about your financial needs after retirement. Before hiring any asset allocation company for your retirement investment needs, be sure to go through the credentials and expertise of the company. If you already have a company looking after your investments, you can ask them whether they have special plans for retirement investments. Many companies will have online calculator tools, which will tell you what to do with your money so that you get proper returns on your retirement. On May 11, 2010, USCIS (U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services) announced it had redesigned the Permanent Resident Card, which most of us know more commonly as the Green Card. In a moment of sheer genius, the designers of the "Green" Card actually decided to make it green in color for ease of recognition!

A Green Card is proof of authorization to live and work in the United States. A newly issued Green Card is valid for 10 years for lawful permanent residents and 2 years for conditional residents.

Some existing Green Cards have an expiration date - these cards will remain valid until they expire. Holders of Green Cards with an expiration date will receive the redesigned version when seeking a renewal or replacement.

Other existing Green Cards have no expiration date. These cards remain valid however; USCIS is recommending that people who have a card without an expiration date apply to replace their cards with the newly redesigned version.

Evidence of Work Eligibility

The intent of the newly redesigned Permanent Resident Card is to help prevent immigration fraud. The new Green Card incorporates state-of-the-art technology to prevent counterfeiting and facilitate accurate authentication. The enhanced features are intended to be useful to law enforcement, employers, and immigrants - all of whom look to the Green Card as definitive proof of authorization to legally live and work in the United States.

Although this seems to be a positive step in decreasing incidents of identity theft and document fraud, it actually creates more uncertainty for employers. It becomes the employer's burden to identify legitimate documents when many employers are not familiar with every version of the Green Card issued over time.

There have been several versions of the Green Card issued over the years. The first Green Card was issued in 1946 and at that time was referred to as an Alien Registration Receipt Card. Few of these are still in circulation. They contain no expiration date and as of March 20, 1996 are no longer valid evidence of permanent residency. Other versions of the Resident Alien Card were issued in 1977 and again in 1989. Oddly enough, neither the 1977 card nor the 1989 were green in color.

In 1997, the card was renamed the Permanent Resident Card. It was updated yet again in 2004. Every time the card has been updated, additional security measures have been added. As for the most current version, holders of older cards will only receive the redesigned Permanent Resident Card when seeking a renewal or replacement card.

Recipients of the redesigned Permanent Resident Card will include those newly approved lawful permanent residents, as well as those who get a renewal or replacement card. As of May 11, 2010 the cost of renewing or replacing a Green Card was $370.

You have to be very careful when hiring an acting agent for your kids. No matter how much you want to launch you kid's career, you should never compromise on their safety.

My kids acting agent should be someone genuine. A parent should be very careful when hiring an agent. As a parent, if you have a bad feeling about an agent, trust your guts and go look for someone else. For instance, when taking your kid to meet an agent, it's never advisable to leave your kid alone with the agent. A good agent will always want a parent to be involved. Don't leave your child alone in a room with strangers; this may not be safe for the kid.

My kids acting agent should know that cosmetics surgery is never going to be an option. A good acting agent would never ask your kid to get any corrective surgery. An agent who tells you that your child could get more jobs if they get their nose fixed or if they get bypass surgery is simply a quack. An agent will advise you on whether you child has what it takes or not to make it in the industry. I believe there is a role for everyone; for the chubby kid, the shy kid, the skinny awkward kid and every other kid who can act; your agent should be able to match your kid to the right job. He or she shouldn't try to change your kid to meet a job requirement especially if the changes include any kind of surgery.

My kids acting agent will never ask my child to take jobs that are not age appropriate. It's not right for your agent to ask your 13 year old to act like a 20 year old in order to get a role. Some may ask the kids to dress suggestively; this is just wrong. As a parent, you need to know where to draw the line. Do not allow your kid to be exploited.

A good kids acting agent should be someone who knows how to communicate well with his clients. If a parent or guardian doesn't want his/her kid to play certain roles or even audition for them, an agent should be able to respect this. Some agents may be desperate to make a commission and so they may try to force the kids to do something against their parent's wishes.

My kids acting agent should be well reputable. I shouldn't have to let my kids work with someone who nobody else knows. This should be an agent who I can get other parents whose kids he represents. Young actors need a lot of patience to work with; parents should be able to support their kids in their acting careers. Equally, the agents should also be very patient and understanding. They should be supportive and help their young clients in building their acting careers.

It's been long since jobs in the government sector has been in demand among the Indian public and such jobs have been held with the highest respect in the country. People from all regions and irrespective of caste, creed and religion have a favoured opinion towards such government jobs and the reasons have been many with lots of debates in favour and against them. But finding these jobs is what concerns people.

Jobs in the government sector are not published on a daily basis as there are certain rules governing the publication of these jobs. Since the vacancies are created only when people in the respective posts retire, it takes a long time for the vacancies to arise. New posts require legislation and few rules and regulations to be adhered to, so that they can be created and people can be recruited.

Government jobs come up and the recruitment process has to be done by authorised government bodies such as the public service commission, railway recruitment board for railway jobs, etc. These jobs are published in the employment news at regular intervals which might be once in a year or sometimes not unless there is a group of vacancies. For getting through such jobs in the government sector, people therefore will need to wait and look at the government employment news to see if the jobs fitting the candidates qualification has been published or not.

The scenario is not like the private sector, where the jobs can be taken up by walking in or applying anytime. Due to the rules laid down which tend to carry on for long years, those interested in such jobs need to keep their eyes and ears open, if they are to get into the services of their choice and those which are commensurate with the qualifications.

In the officer cadre jobs in government, the public service commission offices can provide the necessary information and government employment news. Many journals and newspapers also take out the different jobs as and when they come out. So aspiring candidates have to look out for such publications in the leading daily newspapers and in the local newspapers or they will be required to scout through the internet for such information.

Since, most of the government departments are nowadays going the online way, it is also a possibility to look up for the recent advertisements in the government portals to know about the recently posted jobs in various government sectors. The clerical posts and the workmen jobs are also possible to be known by registering in the local employment bureau for knowing the government employment news.

Such sources for the government jobs are required to be scouted at regular intervals. Moreover, the internet also provides information on the probability of new jobs that might be coming up. But if people are really interested in such jobs, then the sources can be many, even friends as well as the offices in the locality. For those who are interested, the information can trickle down from many sources, and one is required to be vigilant of such news.

Recruitment refers to the process of attracting, screening, and selecting qualified people for a job. For some components of the recruitment process, mid- and large-size organizations often retain professional recruiters or outsource some of the process to recruitment agencies.

The recruitment industry has four main types of agencies: employment agencies, recruitment websites and job search engines, "headhunters" for executive and professional recruitment, and niche agencies which specialize in a particular area of staffing. Some organizations use employer branding strategy and in-house recruitment instead of agencies. Recruitment-related functions are generally carried out by an organization's human resources staff.

The stages in recruitment include sourcing candidates by advertising or other methods, screening potential candidates using tests and/or interviews, selecting candidates based on the results of the tests and/or interviews, and on-boarding to ensure the candidate is able to fulfill their new role effectively.

Headhunters

A "headhunter" is an industry term for a third-party recruiter who seeks out candidates often when normal recruitment efforts have failed. Headhunters are generally considered more aggressive than in-house recruiters or may have pre-existing industry experience and contacts. They may use advanced sales techniques such as initially posing as clients to gather employee contacts as well as visiting candidate offices. They may also purchase expensive lists of names and job titles but more often will generate their own lists. They may arrange a meeting or a formal interview between their client and the candidate and will usually prepare the candidate for the interview, help negotiate the salary and conduct closure to the search. They are frequently members in good standing of industry trade groups and associations. Headhunters will often attend trade shows and other meetings nationally or even internationally that may be attended by potential candidates and hiring managers.

Headhunters are typically small operations that make high margins on candidate placements (sometimes more than 30% of the candidate's annual compensation). Due to their higher costs, headhunters are usually employed to fill senior management and executive level roles. Headhunters are also used to recruit very specialized individuals; for example, in some fields, such as emerging scientific research areas, there may only be a handful of top-level professionals who are active in the field. In this case, since there are so few qualified candidates, it makes more sense to directly recruit them one-by-one, rather than advertise internationally for candidates. While in-house recruiters tend to attract candidates for specific jobs, headhunters will attract both candidates and actively seek them out as well. To do so, they may network, cultivate relationships with various companies, maintain large databases, purchase company directories or candidate lists and cold call prospective recruits.

Headhunters are increasingly using social media to find and research candidates. This approach is often called social recruiting.

Niche recruiters

Specialized recruiters exist to seek staff with a very narrow specialty. Because of their focus, these firms can very often produce superior results due to their ability to channel all of their resources into networking for a very specific skill set. This specialization in staffing allows them to offer more jobs for their specific demographic which in turn attracts more specialized candidates from that specific demographic over time building large proprietary databases. These niche firms tend to be more focused on building ongoing relationships with their candidates as is very common the same candidates are placed many times throughout their careers. Niche firms also develop knowledge on specific employment trends within their industry of focus (e.g. The energy industry) and are able to identify demographic shifts such as aging and its impact on the industry.

Employee referral

A employee referral program is a system where existing employees recommend prospective candidates for the job offered, and if the suggested candidate is hired, the employee who referred receives a cash bonus.

In some cases the Organization provides the Employee referral bonus only if the referred employee stays with the organization for stipulated time duration (most cases 3 - 6 months). Referral bonus depends on the grade of the referred employee, higher the grade higher the bonus however the method is not used for senior level hiring.

In-house recruitment

Under pressure to reduce costs, both large- and medium-sized employers tend to undertake their own in-house recruitment, using their human resources department, front-line hiring managers and recruitment personnel who handle targeted functions and populations. In addition to coordinating with the agencies mentioned above, in-house recruiters may advertise job vacancies on their own websites, coordinate internal employee referrals, work with external associations, trade groups and/or focus on campus graduate recruitment. Some large employers choose to outsource all or some of their recruitment process (recruitment process outsourcing) however a much more common approach is for employers to introduce referral schemes where employees are encouraged to source new staff from within their own network.

Executive research firms and sourcing firms

These firms are the new hybrid firms in the recruitment world able to combine the research aspects (discovering passive candidates) of recruiting and combine them with the ability to make hires for their clients. These firms provide competitive passive candidate intelligence to support companies' recruiting efforts. Normally they will generate varying degrees of candidate information from those people currently engaged in the position a company is looking to fill. These firms usually charge a daily rate or fixed rate. Many times this uncovers names that cannot be found with other methods and will allow internal recruiters the ability to focus their efforts solely on recruiting.

Executive Research began as an extension of 'headhunting' or 'executive search' businesses. Initially used to support advertising strategies, executive research quickly overshadowed advertisements as a much more focused and successful alternative.

The ability of researchers to pinpoint top talent - passive or otherwise - gave the headhunting businesses a much higher success rate and quicker turnaround time, especially with the harder to fill vacancies.

Soon the gap in the market became apparent, and executive research moved away from 'in-house' to a more main stream market, although still remaining 'behind the scenes' in the recruitment industry.

More recently, the economic downturn has forced businesses to review their recruitment practices that have resulted in them working directly with the research firms. By removing the 'middleman' businesses have direct access to much more cost-effective solutions, and have been able to retain a firmer grasp on their recruitment drives and processes. Business also have access to full disclosure on market intelligence which has proven to be vital for more forward thinking businesses, especially with regards to succession planning.

Process

Job analysis

The proper start to a recruitment effort is to perform a job analysis, to document the actual or intended requirement of the job to be performed. This information is captured in a job description and provides the recruitment effort with the boundaries and objectives of the search. Oftentimes a company will have job descriptions that represent a historical collection of tasks performed in the past. These job descriptions need to be reviewed or updated prior to a recruitment effort to reflect present day requirements. Starting a recruitment with an accurate job analysis and job description ensures the recruitment effort starts off on a proper track for success.

Sourcing

Sourcing involves 1) advertising, a common part of the recruiting process, often encompassing multiple media, such as the Internet, general newspapers, job ad newspapers, professional publications, window advertisements, job centers, and campus graduate recruitment programs; and 2) recruiting research, which is the proactive identification of relevant talent who may not respond to job postings and other recruitment advertising methods done in #1. This initial research for so-called passive prospects, also called name-generation, results in a list of prospects who can then be contacted to solicit interest, obtain a resume/CV, and be screened (see below).

Screening and selection

Suitability for a job is typically assessed by looking for skills, e.g. communication, typing, and computer skills. Qualifications may be shown through r?sum?s, job applications, interviews, educational or professional experience, the testimony of references, or in-house testing, such as for software knowledge, typing skills, numeracy, and literacy, through psychological tests or employment testing. Other resume screening criteria may include length of service, job titles and length of time at a job. In some countries, employers are legally mandated to provide equal opportunity in hiring. Business management software is used by many recruitment agencies to automate the testing process. Many recruiters and agencies are using an applicant tracking system to perform many of the filtering tasks, along with software tools for psychometric testing.

Onboarding

"Onboarding" is a term which describes the process of helping new employees become productive members of an organization. A well-planned introduction helps new employees become fully operational quickly and is often integrated with a new company and environment. Onboarding is included in the recruitment process for retention purposes. Many companies have onboarding campaigns in hopes to retain top talent that is new to the company; campaigns may last anywhere from 1 week to 6 months.

Internet recruitment and websites

Such sites have two main features: job boards and a r?sum?/curriculum vitae (CV) database. Job boards allow member companies to post job vacancies. Alternatively, candidates can upload a r?sum? to be included in searches by member companies. Fees are charged for job postings and access to search resumes. Since the late 1990s, the recruitment website has evolved to encompass end-to-end recruitment. Websites capture candidate details and then pool them in client accessed candidate management interfaces (also online). Key players in this sector provide e-recruitment software and services to organizations of all sizes and within numerous industry sectors, who want to e-enable entirely or partly their recruitment process in order to improve business performance.

The online software provided by those who specialize in online recruitment helps organizations attract, test, recruit, employ and retain quality staff with a minimal amount of administration. Online recruitment websites can be very helpful to find candidates that are very actively looking for work and post their resumes online, but they will not attract the "passive" candidates who might respond favorably to an opportunity that is presented to them through other means. Also, some candidates who are actively looking to change jobs are hesitant to put their resumes on the job boards, for fear that their companies, co-workers, customers or others might see their resumes.

Job search engines

The emergence of meta-search engines allows job-seekers to search across multiple websites. Some of these new search engines index and list the advertisements of traditional job boards. These sites tend to aim for providing a "one-stop shop" for job-seekers. However, there are many other job search engines which index solely from employers' websites, choosing to bypass traditional job boards entirely. These vertical search engines allow job-seekers to find new positions that may not be advertised on traditional job boards, and online recruitment websites.
